Leeds City Council are revoking the HMO licences’ held by Tariq Zaman. It is reported on the Watchdog website that:
“A spokesperson from Leeds City Council told Watchdog:
‘Tariq Zaman has been named as a HMO licence holder for 18 properties owned by his family. Due to the prosecutions, the council has taken the view that he is no longer a fit and proper person and we are now taking steps to remove his licence completely.’ ”
In the same article it was also reported that Tariq Zaman and his brother Khalid Mahmood Zaman must pay £11,000 for renting out four properties because they did not hold the required HMO Licences. The previously published article stated that Mr Khalid Zaman had his HMO licence revoked and following prompting from his solicitor we confirm that Mr Khalid Zaman never held such licence. It is for this reason that Mr Khalid Zaman was fined.
Tariq Zaman individually lets properties as an independent landlord and has also had been owned, involvement in Providence Properties which has now been renamed as The Student Property Shop.
We strongly advise you to only rent from a landlord who is part of a code or accreditation scheme; neither the Student Property Shop nor Mr Tariq Zaman are part of any such schemes. In fact the Student Advice Centre is still dealing with substantial claims against Mr Tariq Zaman for unpaid deposits.
Check before you sign a contract to make sure the landlord has a valid HMO licence!
