South Korea to set up wind energy project
Pakistan Wednesday, September 1st, 2010As part of its multi-pronged strategy to augment the supply of energy in the country the Government is in process of contacting foreign governments as well as private parties which can provide financial and technical assistance for the development of this vital sector, sources disclosed today.
In this connection an understanding has been reached with South Korea which will invest $ 2 million for the installation of wind turbines in Hawks Bay and Jhimpir areas near Karachi to generate 750 kilowatts of electricity. The area is known for its strong winds, and the turbines that will be installed there will generate enough electricity to meet local needs, sources added.
To put the project on the ground a Korean delegation comprising the Project Director of Korea Electric power Company (KEPCO) Mr Lee Jin Hee and other Korean officials visited Pakistan and held fruitful meetings with Pakistani officials, including Sindh Board of Investment DG Younus Dagha and CEO Alternate Energy Development Board Arif Alauddin. The meeting, among other things. discussed the preparation of the feasibility report and allotment of land. The Korean delegation informed that the amount for the wind turbine project near Karachi will be donated from the special fund called “Climate Change Partnership Project Fund” set up by the Korean government to promote alternate energy projects in Asian countries.
Sources said that Korea is known for its expertise in alternative energy and can prove very helpful in promoting alternate energy projects based on solar and wind energy and coal in Pakistan.
