Sacred territory

A heated debate is going on about the wisdom or otherwise of building a mosque near Ground Zero, the site of the Sept. 11 attacks.

What I found interesting in the arguments for and against the proposed mosque is the claim by the opponents of the mosque, mostly Republican hard-liners and pro-Israeli neo-cons, that the Ground Zero is a “sacred territory” because so many innocent lives perished there in the Sept. 11 attacks. Then what about Hiroshima and Nagasaki? The many villages in Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia that were relentlessly bombed by Americans killing thousands of people, most of them unarmed civilians. Iraq can also claim many Ground Zeros, all thanks to the US and UK.

When it comes to Afghanistan and Pakistan, you can count the “Ground Zeros” the US has inflicted on these countries.
