Pervez Musharraf complains against malignance

Pakistani former President Pervez Musharraf said an unwarranted campaign to malign him is being waged, sources quoted him as talking to a British TV channel Friday.

Congratulating the nation on Independence Day, he said he wants to live and die for Pakistan. “My legal team would defend the case,” he was quoted by the private channel GEO as saying.
Meanwhile, Musharraf said he would return to Pakistan very soon in an interview with a private TV channel Thursday, local newspaper reported Friday.

The former president said he would always be with his country when needed. He said he had been busy making the rounds of the international academic circuit delivering lectures, and would return as soon as he had finished with his commitments.

He said he would be ready to face any legal challenges or case that were registered against him. He said he did not intend to live abroad permanently.

On July 31, Pakistani Supreme Court ruled that Musharraf’s decision to impose emergency rule and dismiss dozens of senior judges in 2007 was unconstitutional.

A 14-member Supreme Court bench headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had summoned Musharraf to appear in person or through a lawyer to explain his position, but the ex-president ignored the notice.

Police in the Pakistani capital Tuesday registered a case against Musharraf for illegally detaining top judges during 2007 emergency rule a day after a court called for registration of the case.

Musharraf was charged under various sections which carry at least a three-year jail term, said Liaquat Niazi, Deputy Suprintendant of Police at Secretriate Police Station, where the case was registered.

Opposition leader and former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif demands the government put Musharraf on trial for suspending constitution.

Musharraf, currently in London, resigned in August 2008 to avoid impeachment by the parliament.
