Pakistans principled position on Kashmir still unchanged

Pakistan extending political
support to the just cause of the Kashmir struggle said Pakistan’s
principled position that Kashmir issue should be resolved in accordance
with the UN resolutions remains unchanged. “The suggestions about out
of the box solution and President Pervez Musharraf’s four proposals are
aimed at making a beginning towards resolution of the dispute,” said
the Foreign Office spokesman in his weekly briefing.

He
emphasized that in addition to Pakistan and India, Kashmiris are also
party to the dispute and they should be on board.  Pakistan is
committed to the just cause of Kashmiris, he added.

The
spokesman said Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) is also working
on the issue of Palestine. He said Pakistan is also making its efforts
for the strengthening of OIC so that it could play its role more
effectively.

Replying
to a question he said Pakistan is opposed to the fencing of the Line of
Control and expressed its resentment on the issue.

The spokesman said India has come to the negotiation table to discuss the disputed issue of Kashmir.

Regarding
next round of talks between Pakistan and India, the spokesman said the
two countries have yet to conclude current round of talks under
confidence building measures which will conclude by the two foreign
secretaries. He said the meeting of the foreign secretaries of Pakistan
and India will be held in the near future.

Answering
a question about British Prime Minister’s remarks about the support to
India for permanent membership of UN Security Council, the spokesman
said Pakistan is against creation of new centers of privileges and
supports just and equitable reforms of Security Council that correspond
to the interests of all and not just a few member states of the world
body.

The
spokesman said Pakistan is an active member of the Uniting for
Consensus Group of countries that are opposed to expansion in the
permanent category of the Security Council membership.

Regarding
Indo-Israeli defence collaboration, the spokesman said Pakistan is
opposed to introduction of new weapons system in South Asia as the
region needs economic progress and prosperity and not new weapons.

He
told a questioner that irrespective of what others think, the President
and the Government of Pakistan are committed to holding free, fair,
transparent and peaceful elections. This is in the interest of people
of Pakistan, he added.

Replying
to a question, he said Iran has not stated that it would sign the
Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) gas pipeline agreement only with the future
Government in Pakistan.

About
the control of nuclear assets, the spokesman said as head of state
President Musharraf has the control of these assets and the Chief of
Army Staff if part of the government.
