Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates to make Friends of Pakistan a success

Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are working closely to hold the first operational meeting of the Friends of Pakistan (FOP) in Abu Dhabi next month.

The initiative taken by President Asif Ali Zardari has attracted enthusiastic support from a number of friendly countries including the UAE. The meeting planned in the UAE capital is expected to yield results. In that context, Foreign Minister Makhdoom Shah Mahmood Qureshi held a meeting with his UAE counterpart Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al-Nahayan on the margins of the 63rd session of the UN General Assembly in New York and discussed the whole spectrum of the bilateral ties including the FOP.

Foreign Minister Qureshi thanked the UAE foreign minister for participating in the meeting of Friends of Pakistan in New York and for offering to host the next meeting in UAE. The purpose of setting up this group was to create global ownership of the problem of terrorism and extremism confronting the region.

The period before the next session, he stressed, should be utilized to create the structures and modalities to gain maximum benefit from the initiative. The foreign minister of the UAE said that his country always considered Pakistan to be a good friend and ally and looked forward to supporting the country and its leadership.

UAE is a major investor in Pakistan and wants to continue doing so. He appreciated the contribution of more than nine hundred thousand Pakistanis working in the UAE. The two foreign ministers expressed satisfaction over the state of bilateral relations and discussed the modalities for holding of the next session of Friends of Pakistan group in Abu Dhabi.
