Pakistan – The Nation of Dead Souls
Editorials, Pakistan Thursday, September 2nd, 2010Pakistan – The Nation of the Dead! It is obvious that that is something terribly wrong with the people of Pakistan because there is so much hatred that mobs can just kill anyone and flee off. The law is there and so are the respective authorities but the many years of slavery have killed our souls. Where inflation was the only enemy one could think of in Pakistan, the times have changed now as the very safety of us and our families are at risk. Gone are the days where families could remain calm while waiting for their children, spouse and other members of the family to arrive home safely and on-time. Today, there is no guarantee as to if the same children; spouse and family members would reach home safely once they leave the house for their daily chores. There is so much hatred amongst us based on religion and ethnicity that we have forgotten that we are Pakistanis’. Everyone just enjoys playing the blame game of pass the puck but no one wants to take a stand and raise their voice.
First it was terror attacks on our soil then it grew into robbery and murders across Pakistan, which was followed by an earthquake in Islamabad. This was only a warning as the terror took on a new face and the nation saw more and more suicide bombs and attacks on hotels, market places and even mosques. To add more to the problems and frustrations, there was the airplane crash in Islamabad and the devastating flood. When that was not enough, we get to see and hear about another “breaking news”, the cold-blooded murder of the two brothers in Sialkot. It is shocking to see what has been happening in our country, especially in the month of Ramadan and still people can eat, sleep and forget about it as if nothing has really happened. The million dollar question however is “Why have we the people of Pakistan turned a blind-eye to all this and become heartless?” It is shocking to see the unedited videos that embarrass you as a nation when any random two people can walk in front of a large crowd and the police and brutally beat two innocent boys to death while the people and police take a backseat and watch. If they had even one shred of dignity left, they would have done the right thing and saved the two brothers by arresting the two mobs by stopping it then and there. Later, they filed a false case of robbery against the two innocent brothers, which attests to the corruption that is killing the very foundation of our country. Talk about justice being served when it was not too long ago that the same government refused to provide security to schools during bomb attacks and schools had won a jackpot by asking each parent for thousands of Rupees for security, yes the same security that the school had with an addition of barely 2 security guards. It is no wonder why the world defines us as corrupt.
Political parties whine that they are unhappy because the nation has not contributed generously for the flood victims as much as they did for the earthquake victims. Well newsflash! With inflation soaring from 8% four years ago to around 25% and authorities still failing to provide flour, sugar, electricity, and basic access to proper education how can one survive let alone donate. What about those people who enjoy power but keep their money in foreign banks? What about those who refuse to pay tax but enjoy holidays on the tax payers’ money? With so much corruption within the administration itself, how can anyone trust that the donated money will in reality reach the victims and not converted and transferred into foreign accounts while killing the power of our currency? It is easy for these authorities to collect votes and at such alarming time say that the victims will be compensated with Rs. 5,000 when the inflation is at an all time high. After all, in which other society can one find corruption as part of everyday life where the poor have always remained as liability.
Is this the Pakistan that Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah and various other Martyrs along his side fought for? If the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam was alive today, he would regret fighting for our Independence all together. Stop this hatred! We keep making the same mistakes and never learn. We talk about democracy but the truth is that there cannot be any democracy in a country that is unstable and where the people are not united. In fact, if these crimes took place in any other country, that country would stand united and fight even if it meant to bring the government down. They would not be standing divided saying that you belong to Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, etc. Yet here we are after 64 years of Independence still fighting amongst ourselves and standing divided. Why does everything always have to be about religion and religiosity, about race and ethnicity, about culture and customs, about rich and poor and about Shias’, Sunnis’, Aga Khanis’, Memons’, Boris, Hindus, Christians, Sindhis’, Balochis’, Punjabis’, Kashmiris’, Burgers, Bun Kababs’s and what not.
One cannot tame many as that is the work of an entire nation. Yes, in politics, it seems that it is no longer about issues and what the people stand for but rather who can sling the most mud, and the party which can has always won and that has been followed by their children and the next generation and the generation after and so on. We have witnessed this time and time again as to miserable failure of the justice system and the administration as well. Furthermore, the actions of the police and others involved within the system were despicable, cowardly and pathetic. However, this should not kill our spirit as a nation and as brothers and sisters. There is an old saying that “united we stand and divided we fall”, which is why the British could so easily overpower us and rule for so many years. It is high time we learn from our mistakes and realize our true identity as a nation instead of fighting amongst ourselves. I urge you all to end the hatred and work collectively; condemn these kinds of horrific acts that threaten our existence. No religion preaches hatred, and the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H) too has taught us love and unity not hatred. Pray for the victims and stand united as a nation. Condemn these acts and raise the voice instead of living a slaved life with a slaved mindset and deal soul. Be Human if not anything else!
Long Live Pakistan… Pakistan Zindabad!

Here I thought that the U.S.A. was bad, but to read this post I see that we have a ways to catch up to where you are today. I post this because I also feel for my country, watching the corruption taking its toll on the masses. I don’t know what the answer is, but it seems that appealing to the sense of patriotism for ones country, falls on deft ears. I do find some comfort in knowing that this problem isn’t just confined to the U.S.A., but am saddened to read it’s in Pakistan to the degree it is. For what it’s worth, know that there are like minded such as yourself in other parts of the World.
