Mobile firms lagging behind in relief work

More than a dozen of multinational mobile companies operating in Pakistan and earning billions of rupees from 80 million subscriber Pakistanis, are not showing that spirit which was exhibited by these companies in relief activities during the earth quick of 2005.

Officials in Pakistan telecommunication authority (PTA) and in information technology (IT) ministry told THE POST the top management in the authority and the ministry is pained over this lukewarm attitude of these companies.

“These companies are professional and commercial, hence there prime concern is to make money, humanity and humanitarian values do not any water in their culture “said one senior PTA officer

An official in the PTA revealed that all these companies are morally bound to extend both in cash and kind to flooding and torrential rains devastated people of Pakistan in this hour of need.

A source in the leading mobile company “Mobilink” confided that the company has taken such initiatives but the major chunk of revenue generated from this initiative will remain in the account of the company and if half of that generated revenue is spend for relief purpose, it will go a long way to cater the needs of flood victims.

The sources in the PTA told the POST that the top management of authority is planning to convene a meeting of mobile companies’ chief operating officers and other concerned management to brief them on the destruction.
