Kristallnacht: Shah Rukh Khan. We would have to leave India?

All of a sudden or by pre-meditated design, the Shiv Sena threats have become beyond real. Not only have all theaters in Mumbai and Maharastra been told to stop the screening Shah Rukh Khan’s (SRK) latest movie, but the family of SRK and other Northe Indians, Christians, and Muslims have been threatened in the current spate of violence which spells the destruction of any semblance of the farcical vaneer of “secularism” in Bharat (aka India). Delhi has long proclaimed that “secularism is the foundation of its existence.

Kristallnacht: My daughter asked me whether we would have to leave India: Shah Rukh Khan

The Shiv Sena attack on Shahrukh Khan is forcing the family to rethink whether it is safe for them to live in Bharat. Of course the Shiv Sena attack is not directed against Shah Rukh Khan the individual–it directed at the North Indians, Christians, Dalits Muslims–anyone who does not belong to the Sen’s cult in Maharastra.

Mumbai: Shiv Sena on Wednesday stepped up its attack on Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on the “Mumbai for all Indians” remark, raking up Sonia Gandhi’s foreign origin. “Mumbai may belong to all Indians but how can it belong to an Italian mummy,” Thackeray said in an editorial in Sena mouthpiece ‘Saamna’  Indian Express

Why is the UN silent about Gujarat, and Mumbai? Why is the Shiv Sena, Bajrang Dal, the BJP and the RSS not on the US terror list? Mr. Modi’s entrance has been banned by the US–why is he not on the US and UN terror lists?

Let us look into the seeds of history and see how other fascist organization planned pogroms against a religious minority.

Secular India =Dalits under Hindu Rashtra & Muslims under Ram Raj.

On November 9, 1938, the Nazis unleashed a wave of pogroms against Germany’s Jews. In the space of a few hours, thousands of synagogues and Jewish businesses and homes were damaged or destroyed. This event came to be called Kristallnacht (“Night of Broken Glass”) for the shattered store windowpanes that carpeted German streets.

The pretext for this violence was the November 7 assassination of a German diplomat in Paris, Ernst vom Rath, by Herschel Grynszpan, a Jewish teenager whose parents, along with 17,000 other Polish Jews, had been recently expelled from the Reich. Though portrayed as spontaneous outbursts of popular outrage, these pogroms were calculated acts of retaliation carried out by the SA, SS, and local Nazi party organizations.

Stormtroopers killed at least 91 Jews and injured many others. For the first time, Jews were arrested on a massive scale and transported to Nazi concentration camps. About 30,000 Jews were sent to Buchenwald, Dachau, and Sachsenhausen, where hundreds died within weeks of arrival. Release came only after the prisoners arranged to emigrate and agreed to transfer their property to “Aryans.”

Kristallnacht culminated the escalating violence against Jews that began during the incorporation of Austria into the Reich in March 1938. It also signaled the fateful transfer of responsibility for “solving” the “Jewish Question” to the SS.

It is a sad day for Mumbai and Bollywood, when its greatest actor is taregted and his family is forced to rehthink his nationality.

Mumbai: Actor Shah Rukh Khan, who has been under fire from the Shiv Sena for favouring Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League (IPL), on Saturday said he didn’t owe an apology to the party but was not seeking a “confrontation” either.

“I do not want any confrontation. I am trying to explain myself on every platform,” said Khan at a press conference in Mumbai.

The Shiv Sena has threatened to ban Khan’s new film, My Name Is Khan, in Mumbai theatres for his remarks and sought an apology from him. Posters and banners of the movie have been torn.

“I stand by what I have said. Maybe that group (Shiv Sena) has misunderstood what I have said.”

Khan urged that his “views” on cricket be separated from his film. “If my view can be kept separate from my film’s view, I will be very thankful. I would really like if it can be disassociated,” he said.

The actor said he didn’t believe that he was being “targeted” because he is a Muslim but felt that his patriotism had been questioned.

“My daughter asked me whether we would have to leave India. That made me very sad,” said Khan, who owns the IPL team, Kolkota Knight Riders. Times of India.

As the Shiv Sena’s campaign to destroy SRK and the Mumbai movie industry continues, a perplex world watches in amazement as Bharat implodes from self-inflicted xenophobic odium.

Multiplexes and single-screen theatres in Mumbai have taken off posters and hoardings of Shah Rukh Khan’s My name is Khan following an order by the Shiv Sena. Cinema managements declined to come on record, but their fear of violence by Sainiks was apparent Tuesday, and there appeared to be some doubt over the film’s release, scheduled for February 12.

The Sena is angry with Khan for backing the participation of Pakistani cricketers in the IPL. Sainiks gheraoed SRK’s home in suburban Bandra Sunday, and have been ripping the film’s posters at several places in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai.

“We can’t release the film and put our audience under threat unless the matter is resolved,” said a senior executive of a national multiplex chain on condition of anonymity.

Most distributors were wary of talking, but expressed hope that the matter would be resolved in time for the release. Ramesh Sippy, who owns Raksha Distributors, said it was for the producers, Fox Searchlights and Karan Johar, to sort out the problems with the Sena. Indian Express. Celebrities like  Hrithik Roshan, Bipasha Basu, Celina Jaitley, Preity, Shilpa Shetty, Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan,  Salman Khan, and Sunny Deol have not said anything to support SRK. Mum’s the word.

Why is the movie industry in Bharat quiet? Why is not up in revolt? Why are the producers and directors not supporting SRK and Bollywood’s right to show My name is Khan.

NEW DELHI: Why is the “Bollywood sena” not taking a stand against the Shiv Sena?, ask Shah Rukh Khan’s miffed fans who say a majority of the film fraternity has chosen to keep quiet on the Shiv Sena attacking the superstar for his stand on Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League (IPL).

While celebrities like Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachchan and Anupam Kher have come out in support of Shah Rukh on social networking website Twitter, no one is ready to speak on the issue when approached due to the “Shiv Sena fear”, say SRK fans.

“Shah Rukh is the only actor with guts. The other Bollywood actors are scared of Shiv Sena and are keeping quiet. Don’t apologise SRK,” Mumbai-based Abhijeet Survase said.

Added an exasperated Punit Agarwal from Kolkata: “They might be going online in his support on Twitter but are actually going off when it comes to speaking out loud in support of Shah Rukh… The heroes of Bollywood can stand up against wrong only in reel, but not in reality. They might be having macho bodies but actually are paper tigers.”

Shah Rukh, who owns IPL team Kolkata Knight Riders, is facing the ire of the Shiv Sena for his comments favouring the inclusion of Pakistani players in the third season of the IPL.

The Shiv Sena has sought a public apology from the star and threatened to ban his films in Mumbai, starting with the much-awaited “My Name Is Khan” slated to release on February 12.

Bollywood icon Amitabh Bachchan is among the many who have reserved their comments on the issue for fear that their quotes might get misconstrued by the media.

Celebrities like Aamir Khan, Saif Ali Khan, Salman Khan, Hrithik Roshan, Bipasha Basu, Celina Jaitley, Preity, Shilpa Shetty and Sunny Deol chose the mute path when approached on the issue.

“Why is the Bollywood sena not standing against Shiv Sena? Why is Bollywood not standing up for their own fraternity member when he is being harassed by some rigid group for no fault of his?” asked Poonam Iyengar, a Shah Rukh aficionado in Chennai.

Reasoned Deepti Malhotra from the capital: “Why will they speak out? Don’t they have to stay in Mumbai and work there? Everyone knows how orthodox, stubborn and savage these Shiv Sainiks are… Why would the celebrities want to declare a war against the self-proclaimed baap (father) of Mumbai and dig their own graves, eh?” Times of India

Preity Zinta, Abhishek Bachan, and Anupam KherKabir Bedi and Human Rights activist Shabana Azmi supports SRK–but why is Amitabh Bachan silent?

Actress-activist Shabana Azmi is all praise for Rahul Gandhi that he “cocked a snook” at the Shiv Sena with his Mumbai trip Friday. And she feels the Sena is trying to boost its “sagging political career” by intimidating the makers of Shah Rukh-starrer My Name Is Khan.  “More power to Rahul Gandhi for cocking a snook at the Shiv Sena in its own den in Mumbai by taking the local train from Dadar, which is considered the bastion of the Shiv Sena,” said Shabana.  Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi made a four-hour visit to Mumbai Friday during which he surprised everyone by boarding crowded local trains and mixing with locals while Shiv Sena activists showed him black flags.

“This one act has catapulted him into a hero for all those who have been watching him grow in stature as the leader India is looking for,” said Shabana.  The Shiv Sena has launched a vicious attack on Shah Rukh Khan for advocating the participation of Pakistani players in the Indian Premier League (IPL).  “The Shiv Sena is trying to intimidate the makers of My Name is Khan as a peg on which to hang their sagging political career. The state must call their bluff and ensure safe passage for the film.

“I am proud of Shah Rukh Khan for standing by what he has said. The film industry is vulnerable because of huge monies riding on the film. The Shiv Sena has sent letters to theatre owners warning them not to release the film. How can any political power abrogate to themselves this authority?  “The state must protect the theatre owners. I am confident My Name Is Khan will be released and people will go to watch the film. That will be the appropriate response to the bullies.” Shabana hails Rahul for taking on Shiv Sena IANS | Saturday, 06 February , 2010, 15:07

The BJP continues to play good cop, while the Shiv Sena plays the bad cop on Mumbai.

Thre is intense anti-Hindi feeling in the Bharati (aka Indian) state of Maharashtra. This is not new–this is decades old. Letters sent to many Maharashtra cities if written with Hindi addresses end up in the garbage can. Official letters sent in Hindi are not responded to. Some sort of English has been used to bridge the gap between the center and state.

The current rioting has been stirred up by Shiv Sena which is leading the “Mumbai for Maharashtra” campaign forcing others to learn the language or leave Mumbai.

BANGALORE: The Bharatiya Janata Party Saturday said it would not break its alliance with the Shiv Sena even though it disagrees with the ally’s

“Do you make or break an alliance on the basis of one issue?” senior BJP leader M. Venkaiah Naidu asked at a press conference here, making light of Congress challenge to his party to sever the alliance with the Sena since it did not agree with the ‘Mumbai for Marathis’ policy.

Naidu said people had equal rights to settle anywhere in the country, adding BJP president Nitin Gadkari has made the party stand very clear.

Disagreeing with Sena’s ‘Mumbai for Marathis’ stand, Gadkari has said: “We consider entire India as one unit, including Jammu and Kashmir, irrespective of caste, creed, sex and religion.”

Naidu said, “On this particular issue we have differences of opinion with Shiv Sena.”

Congress spokesperson Abhishek Manu Singhvi, talking to reporters in New Delhi Monday, had dared the BJP to sever its alliance with the Sena “in the interest of accountability” since it did not agree with the ‘Mumbai for Marathis’ stand.

“In the interest of accountability, you (the BJP) must break up any alliance (with Shiv Sena),” Singhvi had told reporters.
‘Mumbai for Marathis’ stand.

It goes beyond SRK and his movies. The Shiv Sena has banned the Australians from Mumbai, and even the Australian players have been threatened.

the visitors are wary of threats from organisations like the Shiv Sena who threatened to attack Australian cricketers over the alleged racist attacks down under. The Australians would be advised not to venture out of their hotels or wear their team colours outside the stadiums. Bob Nicholls, the Australian chief of security for the IPL stated that the security arrangements were satisfactory. “The times that we would be most concerned about is when they are out and about on their own, we will be giving them a list of dos and don’ts. It is pretty straightforward, the greater risk is if people are going out on their own rather than in a team environment, and not to go out advertising that they are Aussies, wearing Aussie shirts. The same advice has been given to the Australian hockey team []for the World Cup],” Nicholls was quoted as saying.

Shane Watson, Cameron White, David Hussey, David Warner, Shaun Marsh, Ryan Harris, Dirk Nannes and Shaun Tait are among the 21 players from Australia contracted to play the IPL. “The security situation in India is not what we would like it to be, there are concerns, the threat level does remain high. There are concerns generally outside of the Shiv Sena thing. Shiv Sena is obviously a particular area of concern for the Aussies, but from our perspective, we look at the team as a whole,” he said. “And what I can say is that the level of protection we are providing for the general threat is greater than if we were implementing security strategy purely for the Shiv Sena threat, therefore we believe the players will be safe. At the moment there doesn’t seem to be any acts of violence happening against Australians in India.” India

Bharati states are based on language. The current rioting in Mumbai and Maharashtra was inevitable. The formation of states on the basis of language and ethnicity was wrong. Bharat had 560 states. It tried to amalgamate the states into linguistic havens. The Language based havens have not become xenophobic forcing Delhi to form fifty such states–each seeking its own agenda and all seeking some distance from Delhi in terms of sovereignty and secession. Kashmir and Assam for example want total independence from Delhi. Othe states are in varying degrees of confusion and chaos–putting the entire idea of “India” into flux.

Ram Puniyani gives us some insight into Shive Sena.

Shiv Sena has a complex history. It was supported by industrialists and partly nurtured by a section of Congress leadership decades ago. The idea then was to smash the left trade unions, which were struggling for workers rights in an honest way. Later the same Shiv Sena attacked the South Indians, then Gujaratis and finally North Indians for sometime before jumping on the Rath (chariot) of Hinduvta spearhead by BJP’s Lal Krishna Advani. Shiv Sena has been the most firm ally of BJP and its communal politics all through. Shiv Sena’s supremo Bal Thackeray has also been indicted in the Srikrishna Commission report, a report which has been put into cold storage by the Congress government. Interestingly Shiv Sena, SS, presents its role in Mumbai violence as being that of protecting Hindus, a formulation which is from the World of make believe, which presents victim as the culprit, as Shrikrishna Commission makes it very clear.

The methods employed by Shiv Sena earlier and MNS (Maharashtra Nav Nirnman Sena) of Raj Thackeray show the parallels with the ones’ employed by Hitler’s foot soldiers, i.e. to intimidate people through street violence. In this direction on regular basis Shiv Sena in particular attacked artists, Gulam Ali, a Gazal singer from Pakistan, M.F. Hussain, a Painter, and now Shahrukh Khan. In these ‘storm trooper’ methods it SS had been associated with the parallel ones from RSS stream, Bajrang Dal etc. The idea is to vandalize and make a glaring attack on liberal values of democracy. While outfits like SS, MNS and Bajrang Dal are fascists, they use democratic space, the lapses of opportunist centralist politics to come up in the social space. Hitler also used the democratic space to come, to abolish the democratic space itself. The analogies of such formations with Hitler, fascists are too glaring to be ignored. They are a product politics of vested interests, taking advantage of centrist formations like Congress and than turning into Frankenstein’s monsters.

With Bal Thackeray trying to pass on the mantle of his fascist politics, Uddhav and Raj, son and nephew respectively, claimed the inheritance. Bal Thackeray decided to anoint his son Uddhav as the heir apparent. Peeved by this the more aggressive Raj launched his own outfit, Maharashtra Nav Nirman Sena. In the formative period of MNS, Congress again played a complicit role by sitting pretty when Raj unleashed his aggression against hapless taxi drivers from North India and Bihar. This acted as the tonic for the MNS, and it became bold enough to unleash rampage time and over again. It has come to stay as a political force. The role of Congress has been very compromising as for as formation of Shiv Sena and MNS are concerned.

Shiv Sena- MNS primarily belong to divisive- fascist anti national ideology of communalism and regionalism. Their disregard for the values of Indian Constitution is there for all to see. Their politics also proves that divisive ideologies strengthen each other. Both these outfits, particularly Shiv Sena has been using both these sectarianisms for its political benefit.

Shiv Sena and its offshoot, Maharashtra Nav Nirman Sena, both thrive on the divisive sentiments. The spirit of National integration is being attacked by the actions of these regional forces. We should not target our citizens in the name of religion or region. The encouragement of Hate against Pakistan is shortsighted and is playing to the crude emotions, ignoring the deeper causes of terrorism, for that the finger of accusation should point to the US policies which has been pursing its politics of control in the region and has used Pakistan as the base and ally for its ambitions of appropriating this Black Gold. One must support the rights of all our citizens within the limits of Indian Constitution and restrain the regional and communal forces for the sake of national progress.
