India to retain buildup on Pakistan border
Local Sunday, May 2nd, 2010India has admitted that cross border infiltration in Jammu and Kashmir had come down. “We have to monitor situation in the coming months. Let us see what happens in near future. With the melting of snow infiltration bids may increase,” Home Secretary GK Pillai told reporters here.
Pillai ruled out any possibility of withdrawing paramilitary BSF from the Pakistan border despite Islamabad shifting around 100,000 troops from its eastern borders to tribal areas.
“The BSF is there to guard the borders and check infiltration,” he said. Pillai said that centre had increased pension of militancy hit victims from Rs 500 to Rs 750 per month. “The government has also allocated Rs 168 crores to state police for security related expenditure and Rs 120 crores for relief and rehabilitation package. Similarly Rs 90 crore compensation has been granted to victims of violence in JK,” he added.
Meanwhile, the Indian Border Security Forces (BSF) opened unprovoked firing with heavy weapons at Sialkot working boundary, Shakargarh sector late Friday night.
According to a press release issued by Pakistan Rangers here Saturday, the BSF started firing around midnight which continued for two to three hours.
Following retaliation by the Chenab Rangers, the firing was stopped. No loss of life was reported.
A wing commanders level meeting was called and a protest on the incident was lodged to the BSF.
