Imran Khan surpasses politicians in aid work
General Sunday, August 29th, 2010Outsmarting the politicians in Pakistan, ex-sportsman-turned politician and philanthropist Imran Khan is all set to lead a caravan of 300 truckloads of relief goods for Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province’s flood victims on Monday, the largest ever aid effort mounted by a politician in the country.
The humanitarian initiative has been launched jointly by Imran Khan and Mir Khalilur Rahman Foundation, the charity arm of Pakistan’s largest media conglomerate Jang Group.
The caravan will be targeting flood victims in Peshawar, Mardan, Malakand, Hazara and Dera Ismail Khan divisions. The relief goods include food items, medicines and clothes. The caravan that has been named as the caravan of hope will start from I-11 sector in Islamabad and will be accompanied by volunteers from all shades of life who have been named as Ansars.
Imran on Saturday made an appeal to all and sundry, who want to contribute their bit in this relief effort that they can become a part of this caravan if they so desire.
As per the programme, the caravan, which will travel by the Motorway will branch off to its various destinations like Nowshera, Charsadda, Swat, Kohistan, Dera Ismail Khan and Mardan for reaching out to the flood victims of 11 districts.
Imran has been working overtime for the last couple of weeks collecting donations for the flood victims in cash and kind both from abroad as well inside the country. He intends to lead similar caravans in the southern Punjab, Sindh and Balochistan provinces in a few days for which homework is being done.
Imran has collected Rs200 million as donations for flood victims in and outside Pakistan so far.
