I had pardoned Musharraf: Gilani

Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani on Wednesday reiterated that the government will support a consensus resolution for the trial of former President Pervez Musharraf.“If a consensus resolution is brought before the House, I will be the first person to support it,” Prime Minister Gilani told the National Assembly.

Yousuf Raza GilaniHe, however, urged the members of parliament, particularly the opposition, to play their role in strengthening democracy in the country and not to play with the galleries. “We should not play with the galleries”.

The premier was responding to the comments of the Opposition Leader Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan, who had stressed the government to come forward with the resolution for the trial of Pervez Musharraf under Article 6 of the Constitution.

The Prime Minister said his view of a consensus resolution has a background, as it was for the first time in the country’s history that he was unanimously elected by the House with the support of PPP, PML (N), PML (Q), ANP, JUI, MQM, FATA and independents.

Now for me, it is obligatory to take all the partners into confidence (on any issue)”, he said and added the Leader of Opposition will also endorse me on the view that any single party in the House did not have the required majority to get this resolution passed.

Our position is also strong because all of you. Any single party cannot get the resolution approved from the House.”

The Prime Minister further said there was not a single resolution which was adopted without consensus in the House during the last 17 months, adding it was for the first time that the federal budget was also passed unanimously.

Prime Minister Gilani also recalled the views of PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari in a party meeting where he had stated that the wrong-doings of Musharraf should be avenged through restoration of democracy, which has been achieved.

The Prime Minister referred to his address in the National Assembly after becoming the leader of the House and said he had also pardoned Pervez Musharraf despite the fact that he had abrogated the Constitution and “I faced five-year imprisonment.”
