Disguised humanitarians
Blog, Editorials, Local, Politics Sunday, August 29th, 2010Many national and international humanitarian organisations are busy in providing earnest relief and assistance to the massively displaced calamity hit people among those the devoted men of the Pakistan army top the list with their presence in every town, city and district to aid the affected as seen by everyone on national TV. The arrival of around 1000 US marines along with relief goods and helicopters in Karachi for the relief and rehabilitation campaign, to display the US concern and sympathies has been welcomed by the government and people of Pakistan. This campaign, however, is media shy as, despite heavy TV coverage of each and every area of the flooded region and the organisations and individuals involved in aid activities, none of the hundreds of the US marines can be seen by the people. Where have they vanished? Why don’t we see them working alongside our dedicated jawans and TV anchors to perform the duties they were sent for?
Is the humanitarian mission serving as a disguise to send a surge of troops to exert better control over the bases that has been provided to the US to exercise a control over the south Asian region? Is it why the US Air Force has denied the relief agencies’ use of the Shahbaz Airbase for the distribution of aid and assistance? What humanitarian cause was being achieved when flood waters were diverted to save the base, resulting in 800,000 more people to become homeless and join the endless list of misery? The media, however, needs to play a much larger and objective role during the entire episode of relief and rehabilitation to rebuilding and reconstruction by exposing the reality and unraveling the mysteries of preconceived treachery and deceit.
