Concerns over India are genuine, says former US spy

Milt Bearden, a former Central Intelligence Agency Station Commander in Pakistan, was yesterday quoted as saying Islamabad’s concerns that Afghanistan was being turned into an Indian garrison were legitimate.

Testifying before a US Senate Foreign Relations Committee here, Bearden said the ongoing war against insurgents in Afghanistan was creating windows of opportunities for others at the expense of the US.

He said Indians were busy increasing their influence and financing terrorists to attack Pakistan from Afghanistan, which has alarmed Pakistan and the concerns of Pakistan Army are legitimate in this regard.

It was impossible for the US and other Western countries to provide the level of troops needed to ensure the security of Afghan people, the former spy said.

Earlier Senator John Kerry, in his opening remarks, said relations between the US and Pakistan have suffered its share of strains. Many Pakistanis believe the US has exploited them for strategic goals.
