Came close to solving Kashmir: Musharraf

Former Pakistan president General Pervez Musharraf has reiterated his claim that he “wasn’t far from resolving” the Kashmir problem with Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on the basis of his four-point formula that included the region’s demilitarization and making boundaries irrelevant.

Musharraf was addressing a function at the House of Lords organized by Lord Iltaf Sheikh, an opposition Conservative party peer of Pakistani origin.

Earlier, at the Royal Institute of International Affairs, Musharraf appealed: “For the sake of the world, for the sake of the region, for the sake of bilateral gains, we must have peace between India and Pakistan.” He maintained that out of the three disputes, the two countries were close to solving the most difficult one — Kashmir. “May I compliment Prime Minister Singh for his vision, flexibility and sincerity,” he said.

The former Pakistan president said the other two disputes — Siachen and Sir Creek — could be solved ‘tomorrow’. He described militancy as the greatest peril for Pakistan and not India.

  1. The only viable solution is to hold referendum jointly under UN and OIC. Let the
Kashmiris decide what they want. The Indian politicians and public know very
well that Kashmiris do not want to stay with India. Their choice will be between
Independence or Pakistan. As an Independent Muslim Nation they would still be close to us then rather to their present subjugators.
