Attack brought SL, Pakistan closer against terrorism

ISLAMABAD: Sri Lankan High Commissioner (HC) Air Chief Marshal (r) Jayalath Weerakkody on Thursday said the Lahore terror attack on his country’s cricket team had brought Pakistan and Sri Lankan closer against terrorists.

“Both countries are victims of terrorism and the attack has brought us closer to fight against terrorists and eliminate this threat,” he said in an exclusive talk with Daily Times at the Sri Lankan High Commission.

He said Sri Lankans knew that the attack on cricketers was not from Pakistan. “The good feelings of the Sri Lankan people for Pakistan have increased due to huge sympathy shown by Pakistani people for the team,” he said.

He said the Tamil Tigers had links outside Sri Lanka but he had no information about their involvement in the Lahore attack.

Weerakkody said Pakistan was solely carrying out investigations into the March 3 attack and it had promised to share the findings of the probe with Sri Lanka.

He said any future visit of Sri Lankan cricket team would depend on an invitation from Pakistan, hoping that the next world cup would be held in the subcontinent as scheduled.

The high commissioner also handed over passports and travel documents to the bus driver of the Sri Lankan team Mehr Muhammad Khalil, who was invited for a weeklong visit by the Sri Lankan government.
